The Truth About the Universe
Is there such a thing as Truth?
Sooner or later, or at different stages in our life, we come face to face with existential questions: What is the universe, really? Is there a supreme being, like God, like “the Force” or something like that, organizing the universe and making sure it is a meaningful system, not an accidental chaos? Human beings favor views ranging from clear cut, straight atheist views – there is no life after death, all human beings are selfish, and the universe is just a big accidental mud pile – to devoted religious belief in a (reasonably benevolent or rather control-freak) God meddling in our lives every day, imposing events in accordance with our minute-to-minute behaviors and telling us what to do and most importantly what not to do!
As for me, I land myself somewhere in the middle of all that. I have no need to establish firm beliefs that things are this way or that way. Rather, I like sailing down the river of life watching the movie of life with an open mind, reflecting on all the impressions I am receiving and allowing all of these to lightly influence (but not take over) my understanding of life and what may have caused life to emerge. If something I see prompts me to change my views, fine. Why not? I see no advantage in holding on to views or beliefs that may be outdated or limited. If my “beliefs” get bulldozed over once in a while, so what?
Recently, Chester and I watched a TV program where the presenter spoke about a scientific exploration into how plants, animals and even rain, sunshine and the planet are acting with self-awareness and are self-organizing. Plants and animals are working intelligently to adapt to weather, availability of nutrition and so on. All elements of nature work smart, they said. They know what they are doing. He called it The Self-Aware Universe. See that passage under this heading.
